What decade since the 40s had the best films in your opinion? What are your favorite films of that decade?

Slick Will

I will have to go with the 90s. All of my favorite films came out in the 90s such as Fight Club, The Big Lebowski, Se7en, Pulp Fiction, Reservoir Dogs, The Matrix, Office Space, Dazed and Confused, Being John Malkovich, etc.

I also like 70s movies such as A Clockwork Orange, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, and Star Wars: A New Hope.

Answer
I find that I'm pretty much in sync with IMDB.com ratings with some exceptions and I appreciate all fims, even animated, and some foreign films performed or even dubbed to English. I also know that more and more films came out in each decade and the budgets in real constant dollars got bigger and bigger. I appreciate great special effects as well as a fantastic story or great acting. So bottom line, I did a scientific approach because I've seen thousands of films (literally) and it gets hard to remember every name without seeing titles again. Using 7.9 to the 9.2 maximum of films with at least 2000 votes in English, there were 400 great films since 1940 that met the criteria. Using a relative weighting where 7.9 gets an 86% of the 9.2 and adding up the films in each decade, the 2000's (2000-2009) win over the 1990's (1990-1999), though both had great films, and the best films of the 90's were better than those of the 2000's. There were just more great films later.

Hard to make cut-off's, but this is 2000's
The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King 2003, The Dark Knight 2008, The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring 2001, The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers 2002, Memento 2000, The Pianist 2002, The Departed 2006, WALL·E 2008, Requiem for a Dream 2000, Gladiator 2000, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind 2004 (but in this case, I list it and disagree finding it too disjoint), The Prestige 2006, Snatch 2000, Batman Begins 2005, Gran Torino 2008, Inglourious Basterds 2009, Up 2009, Donnie Darko 2001

In the 1990's, there were actually less great films, but those they were excellent :
The Shawshank Redemption 1994, Pulp Fiction 1994, Schindler's List 1993, Goodfellas 1990, Fight Club 1999, The Silence of the Lambs 1991, Forrest Gump 1994, The Usual Suspects 1995, Se7en 1995, The Matrix 1999, Terminator 2: Judgment Day 1991, Léon: The Professional 1994, American History X 1998, Prime Suspect 1991, Saving Private Ryan 1998, American Beauty 1999, Reservoir Dogs 1992

1980's
Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back 1980, Raiders of the Lost Ark 1981, The Shining 1980, Back to the Future 1985, Aliens 1986, Raging Bull 1980, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street 1982, Star Wars: Episode VI - Return of the Jedi 1983, Once Upon a Time in America 1984, Amadeus 1984, Full Metal Jacket 1987, The Elephant Man 1980, Blade Runner 1982, Die Hard 1988, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade 1989, The Thing 1982, Scarface 1983, Platoon 1986

1970's:
The Godfather 1972, The Godfather: Part II 1974, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest 1975, Star Wars 1977, Apocalypse Now 1979, A Clockwork Orange 1971, Taxi Driver 1976, Alien 1979, The Sting 1973, Chinatown 1974, Monty Python and the Holy Grail 1975, Jaws 1975, Network 1976, Annie Hall 1977, The Deer Hunter 1978

And despite not being on the list of great ones, I loved Blazing Saddles and Young Frankenstein. Mel Brooks got it down right back then.

All movies are personal preference though. Some people like movies that most consider terrible.

What star wars book would take the place of the 7th movie?

vivaladan0

im having trouble finding the name of the books that tell the story of what would be the 7th 8th and 9th movie. any that continue the story of luke han and lea?

Answer
Lucas has denied having any plans in mind for movies 7-9. I remember when I was a kid, the rumors were that there would be 9 movies, but Lucas' official statements in the last few years have been that it was always planned to be 6 movies, no more.

There are many books that continue the Luke/Han/Leia storylines. The "Heir to the Empire" trilogy is a good suggestion, but there's also the Jedi Academy trilogy, the Black Fleet Crisis trilogy, the young Jedi Knights books (Han + Leia's kids...), and solo stories like The Crystal Star and The New Rebellion.

Taking place about 25-29 years after "A New Hope" is a 21-book series called "The New Jedi Order" - it shows the invasion of the Star Wars galaxy by an alien race, this was followed by the Dark Nest trilogy, and then a 9 volume series called "Legacy of the Force". All of these feature Luke, Leia, Han and their extended families.

Right now, they're releasing a 9-volume series called "Fate of the Jedi", set about 43 years after "A New Hope".

The link below is to a list of books on Wikipedia, arranged mostly in chronological order. You can pick the era you most want to read about, and then search for those titles on Amazon.com -

What books have Anakin Solo as the main character?

write4life

I have done some reading on Anakin Solo, and he seem pretty interesting. Anyway, what books have Anakin Solo as the main character? I don't care whether it's a novel, young reader book, comic... Anything. Plus, if you would add your rating on the book (what you thought of it), that would be great.
Thanks!

How do I get of a clip from a Star Wars Movie off a DVD so I can edit it?

When I put the DVD into the computer, it just wants to play it, but I want to grab a certain scene from the movie, save it on my computer, and then edit it for fun , say use my new green screen knowledge to put myself into the the scene and run around. What hardware/software do I need to do this?

Answer
First you need a DVD ripping program. I suggest Magic DVD ripper. After you download a free trial you can save the DVD on to your computer and edit it in movie editing programs like Windows Movie Maker. Hope this helps.

Was the first Star Wars originally just called Star Wars, and not A New Hope?

Simon

Someone told me that when Star Wars was originally released in theaters, the title Episode IV: A New Hope did not appear, and it was only later, either when it was released to more theaters or later on home video, that the title Episode IV: A New Hope appeared in the opening. Is this true?

Answer
The other three who have answered so far are correct in saying that it was called just "Star Wars" when it first came out. Anything else they have said is 100 % pure BS ... all of it.

When it came out in 1977 it was originally titled just "Star Wars". After the awesome success of the movie Lucas realized that he could do more of his story. If you do a simple search of public records in the State of Calif you will find that the name was officially changed to Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope on 01/01/78. There is much debate on whether or not it was ever changed while in the theaters but there is no debate on the fact that when it came out on VHS it had the episode number and new name. Episodes V & VI ALWAYS had the number and titles. I have the original trailers for the movies if you want to see the proof with your own eyes. Much easier though to go to starwars.com and watch them there.

For "Rock Firestorm" to say that there were never any plans for a sequel or prequels he shows that he knows absolutely nothing about the Star Wars Franchise ... When Lucas started there were 12 episodes.

"thirstytrick007" is WAY off on his given dates and events. The Star Wars Original Trilogy was out on VHS in the mid eighties. I know this because I got a new set of them when I graduated HS. What happened in 1997 was the re-release of all 3 movies to theaters. This was the second "version" of the movies. They are the SE versions of the OT. At the time Lucas had went back to the original negatives of the film, transferred them to a digital format and then amped up the special effects and sound. The SE versions were available in VHS format but they were never offered in a DVD format and never will be if you believe Lucas. In 2004 Lucas released the DVD versions of the films on ... you guessed it ... DVD. Basically Lucas took the SE versions ... amped up the FX and added a few scenes and altered a few other ones.

Sorry for the ramble but there is so much misinformation on this subject that when there is a chance to try and make it a little clearer to people I jump on it.

in which order do you recommend i watch the star wars films?

S.Sa

im about 34 and ive never seen a star wars films except bits and pieces of the "episode 3"(the 2005 one). i just bought them all on dvd and i dont know where to start logic would say start at "episode 1" and go on from there but im afraid if i start watching those first later on i might be heavily put off by the poor visual effects of movies from 30 something years ago. any suggestions?

Answer
If you've never seen Star Wars, watch The Original Trilogy first (4,5,6,). It's the 'real' Star Wars and the main story. It's what all things Star Wars are based on. The characters are more developed so you will be more invested in them and want to know their history. The prequels are just back story of characters. The storytelling of the OT was excellent and those special effects were revolutionary for the time. They represent the best of an era and are part of American history. And you wouldn't want to spoil the dramatic effect of one of the biggest plot twists in cinema history that comes in E5 by watching the prequels first. The prequels were written with the idea that we already knew the main story, The Original Trilogy.

Watch for the first time this way :

E4: A New Hope 1977
E5: The Empire Strikes Back 1980
E6: Return of the Jedi 1983

E1: The Phantom Menace 1999
E2: Attack of the Clones 2002
E3: Revenge of the Sith 2005

after the first time, then watch 1,2,3,4,5,6, so the time line is in order.

How can I keep my friend from fighting with his ex girlfriend?

Jerry Jame

My friend and his now ex girlfriend broke up recently but they still live together. They usually live in mutual peace but when my friend gets drunk (which he's doing every night now) he starts rediculous fights with her, threatening to kick her out. She doesn't react maturely (tonight she took his prized Star Wars DVD collection and destroyed it) but it wouldn't come to these things if he didn't egg them on. He doesn't hit her or anything but I'm worried it might soon come to that. Any advice?

I am really getting into reading star wars books and if anyone can give me the exact names of the books dedicated to these stories please leave them to me. It would be much appreciated.

Answer
I'm a pretty big reader of the Star Wars novels. I've read about 80 of the 155 that I know of. There are only a few books in that time period and most of them probably don't match what you are looking for. But given time, I'm sure authors will dive into the era with full force. As it is, most of the books fall into the following Eras:

Sith Era = 5,000 BBY to about 33 BBY
These include a lot of short stories about the lost tribe of the Sith, which aren't really that good if you ask me. A great trilogy about 1,000 years BBY about Darth Bane and the "Rule of Two"
and a few others I haven't read yet. The KOTOR storyline and Knights of the Old Republic are mainly game based storylines at this point.

Rise of the Empire = 33BBY to the battle of Yavin.
This is mostly about the clone wars stuff.

Rebellion = 0 ABY to about 5 ABY.
This is the classic stuff we know and love.
Most of this stuff is must read if you ask me.

New Republic = about 5 ABY to 24 ABY
What happened to many of the characters we know and the "sandbox" era of many writers just jumping into the Star Wars universe. Great books here along with some real stinkers.

New Jedi Order = 24 ABY to about 40 ABY
I'm reading this now. Great storylines, but don't come here until you've satisfied your reading in the other eras. Lots of spoilers if you read these too soon.

Legacy of the Force = about 40 years after.
I haven't read any of this yet.

So really, the stuff you are looking for isn't out there yet. But there is plenty to keep you busy in the meantime. If you want to know other reading recommendations, post again and I'll find it.

Will anything happen after the comic book series star wars legacy war?

What was the very end time of the star wars universe?

Agarrett

I'm talking about the very very end in all star wars fiction. What was the last recorded date in all star wars fiction in ABY.

Answer
Possibly 137 ABY if you count the Legacy comics and campaign guide put out by Dark Horse.

The Complete Star Wars Encyclopedia lists the force ghost of Jerec and the Sith (who perished at the end of the New Sith Wars) continuing to linger in the Valley of the Jedi at 1000 ABY.

At least you know his underwear will be clean.

Women that wear mens underwear?

Bobo Bear

I dont see whats so wierd about it

alot of men like to wear womens underwear!

I am a lesbian ( not a butch)

and im a super laid back person, i like to dress up once in a while though

I think mens boxer briefs and boxers are superr comfortable , i like to wear the fruit of the loom comfort soft kind, and i buy them in cool colors like bright red, bright blue and stuff.

and i like to wear them when i go out like at school, friends houses, the mall ect.

i wear skinny jeans and i un-bunch them when i wear them under jeans and its not a problem

And i live in a cold town, so they keep me warm too.

But its just cloth, why do people freak out about that sort of stuff so much !

when i was a kiddo, i alwayse wanted star wars boys briefs but my mom refused to by them for me because they where "boys". But now im old enough to buy what ever undies i want !

Does anyone els have this problem or know of anyone that does this ? Would my future girlfriends tolerate the fact that i have a secret masculaine side ? ! Im just looking for positive feedback.

Q. I'm just curious, would men be turned off/on by a woman that really enjoyed the Star Wars movies? She doesn't have to constantly quote Yoda, go to conventions, or fantasize about Luke---that's just being obsessed. But what if she actually asked for the series as a gift for her birthday, or some other holiday?

Would most men find that just plain weird or think the fact that she's alittle nerdy attractive?

Honest answers please.
Oh, and I guess to make you think just a little deeper into it. Lets say the woman doesn't look like a typical Star Wars geek, imagine that shes quite a pretty lady and athletic. Would her liking of the movies still completely turn you off despite her appearance?

Thanks in advance

Answer
Well right now EA is offering a ten dollar discount on the game if you pre-order it in November on their website and then buy it in December on their website, when it comes out. When you pre-order, in November, they will give you a gift code which you use when you buy it in December. Here is the link to get the deal. http://deals.net78.net/star_wars.php. Just scroll all the way to the bottom of the page and click on the image that says $10. Everywhere else i looked is selling it for regular price with no discounts.

Where to get hat in Walt Disney World?

Eric

I found a really sweet hat in tatooine traders (the star tours, star wars gift shop at MGM, or Hollywood Studios), but I didn't buy it. Darn my frugality. Anyway, I'm right next to the magic kingdom, and am wondering if there are any stores there that might have the same hat. In case it matters, it looks like bobba fett's helmet, but its a baseball cap. If there's another store anywhere outside of MGM that you think might carry it, that'd be handy. Thanks!

Answer
thats hat stores all over Disney World!
if the hat was affiliated with a ride or some sort of Hollywood Studios, then you probably wont find it at any other park. sorry =(
BUT! you could most likely find it in Downtown Disney. or at last resort, ask a crew member. im sure they would be able to get one for you?
do you have disney hoppers? if so, id say hop on over to HS and buy the hat tomorrow (since its prolly close to closing time tonight)

good luck in finding it! =)
