star wars ships image

Well, apparently the ships in Star wars travel faster then the speed of light and I was watching the 6th movie yesterday and there was light when they were traveling in hyperspace. If you going faster then the speed of light why would you see a blue light?
I am sorry I am not that smart, but please just correct me if I am wrong is this just hollywood movie stuff or are they basing this off real life?
Answer
We have no idea what it's like to travel faster than the speed of light. Most modern physicists think that the maximum speed of the universe is the speed of light, so any show/movie showing faster is Science Fiction, or some sort of fantasy.
Note that there is no sound in space in real life either...yet the ships make all kind of noise from the outside when you watch the movies. It's fake, and meant for an audience to sit back and enjoy.
I should also note that for the ships to go from one part of the galaxy to the other in the time frame they do, they are not only going faster than the speed of light, they are going 1 to 100 million times faster than the speed of light. (Galaxies are freakin' HUGE.)

Why is it that the ships in the Star Wars prequels look more modern than those in the originals?
J
Surely if the new Star Wars movies were set BEFORE the old ones, the spaceships would look more modern or more or less the same as the ones in the prequels? I mean if you look at the Falcon or the Destroyers and Tie Fighters in the originals..they look sorta cheap and more "space-shippy" to our standards. The ships in the new ones look more exotic and futuristic.
I don't get it. Doesn't make sense.

There are many reasons for Lucas doing it this way and they do make sense but as with everything about SW you have to dig down a few levels before you get to the parts that make it understandable. One of the biggest reasons it was done that way was to show the contrast between the Old Republic and The Empire. Remember in ep IV when Obi-Wan was giving Luke his father's lightsabre ... he said "an elegant weapon for a more civilized day". The Old Republic era was all about "style" not "functionality" ... the glam ... the glitz ... kind of like Hollywood these days. The Empire was a totalitarian dictatorship that didn't give a damn about their "subjects" having good things as long as the "important" people had what they needed ... kind of like the Republican party right now. Showing the cultural difference between the Old Republic and the Empire was one of the biggest reasons for the difference you see in the two trilogies.
Another thing to point out was that in the OT (ep 4 - 6) we never see any of the "mainstream" planets. In the OT you have Tatooine, Dagobah, Bespin, Yavin IV, and the forest moon of Endor. All of these planets are "outer rim" planets that are less "sophisticated" than the planets we see in the prequels. That was another major reason for showing the differences in the two trilogies ... to show the huge gap between the "haves" and the "have nots" of the SW galaxy under the two different forms of government.
The points made by "Rex" in his answer actually have little to do with the "real" reason for things looking different. Yes, all of the new CGI & FX methods were lightyears ahead of what they were when Lucas made the OT ... hell ... for the OT Lucas and company pretty much came up with all the stuff they used for the FX in the movies on the fly ... I can just see the "idea room" during that time. IE: George, how the heck are we going to do that kind of scene ... I'd don't know figure it out. But because they could make things look "prettier" isn't the reason they did it. "Rex" also shows that he has limited knowledge of SW with all of this "around 1977" and other nonsense that he says. His answer was "entertaining" but way off on the "truth" department.

Star Wars book set before the rule of two?
Psykofreac
Hi I'm just planning to read a Star Wars book and I want one during the time of the Sith empire. I want to read about good action between a larger numbers of Siths(obviously more than 2) and Jedi's.
So can anyone recommend me some good ones?
Answer
at the moment, there are only the 2 eBooks Precipice and Skyborn that take place before the Darth Bane books.
Crosscurrent, the Nomi Sunrider novel and the Old Republic MMO novel are all still unreleased.
You can get the eBooks about the Lost Tribe of the Sith for free on a few sites. They have some of what you're looking for.. they're about a Sith Ship that crashes on a backwater planet and gets stuck there. They take over the planet and end up finally getting off world 5000 years later to fight Luke Skywalker's Jedi Order in the current Fate of the Jedi series. So far only 2 have been released each being 4 chapters but there will be several more so they should all add up to one novel. Can't remember when the next will be released (was announced at comic con)

but now what you REALLY want is the comics... Tales of the Jedi for some real bad @$* Sith action...

I recommend getting the 2 Omnibus collections. It's easier and far cheaper than buying 8 graphic novels. You can find them both on amazon and they contain all 8 story arcs.

Then finally there is Star Wars: Jedi vs. Sith which I haven't read yet but from what I know, it tells the story of the end of the New Sith Wars, the Battle of Ruusan, and how Darth Bane's Rule of Two came into fruition.
