What Star Wars book should I start with?

Ryan Schae

Im trying to get into the star wars books. In your opinion what series or book should I start with?

Answer
The Truce at Bakura would be a good starting point, because it begins the day after Return of the Jedi. From there, I would go to the Courtship of Princess Leia, then maybe to Tatooine Ghost (If you like Han and Leia) and then to the Thrawn Trilogy by Timothy Zahn. I, personally, did not enjoy the Thrawn Trilogy because it was very complicated. In that particular trilogy, they introduce a lot of new characters and start to move towards really deep-space Extended Universe stuff. However, the Thrawn Trilogy is a vital gateway towards a lot of the Extended Universe books about Han and Leia's children.

If you are looking for a simple, fun read, I would head in the opposite direction, and read the Han Solo Trilogy by A.C. Crispin. The Han Solo trilogy consists of The Paradise Snare, The Hutt Gambit, and Rebel Dawn. It tells the story of Han's life from the time he was 17, right up until Episode 4. It explains things like how Han and Lando came to be friends, how Han won the Millenium Falcon, and how Chewbacca came to owe Han a life debt. It deals with some of Han's early girlfriends, and kind of describes his bachelor life. I would reccommend it because of how closely it matches up with the star wars trilogy.

I posted the wikipedia link for every Star Wars book ever written- I would reccommend finding some of thse titles and reading the synopsis Wikipedia provides. In the back of some of the older Star Wars books, like the Courtship of Princess Leia, there is a list of Star Wars books as well. The list is older and outdated, but it's a little easier than wading your way through the wikipedia list.

Happy Reading!

What is the best star wars book series to read after Young Jedi knights?

Q. Just Finished the Young jedi knights series, and i wanted to know what book series to start next, thanks.

Answer
Well, there are plenty to choose from. I am only going to reference the adult books, since I haven't read any of the young adult or childrens series. However, these books are quite suitable for any age.

As to where to start, that depends upon what you are mainly interested in. I can give you some recommendations based upon what I have read and enjoyed, but most of the books are pretty good.

If you like Sith legend and folklore, then you should start with Path of Destruction and Rule of Two. These are about Darth Bane and take place about 1000 years before the events of Star Wars. They are about the struggle between the Jedi and the Sith for power and supremacy in the old republic. These do not feature any of the characters you will be familiar with, but give you a pretty good idea of the power struggle between the dark side and the light side.

If you enjoy the new movies (Episodes I, II and III), then I would recommend the Republic Commando series. This series is about a couple of units of clone troopers, two young Jedi generals, their battles in the Clone Wars and their struggle for life and freedom from the Imperial Army. These books are Hard Contact, Triple Zero and True Colors.

If you are a Han Solo/Chewbacca fan, make sure to read the Han Solo Trilogy (The Paradise Snare, The Hutt Gambit and Rebel Dawn). These detail the life story of Han Solo up until he meet Luke and Obi Wan in the Cantina.

As far as books that take place after the original movies (up to 40 years after the events of Episodes IV, V and VI), you will probably want to start with (in chronological order by timeline): Tatooine Ghost, The Thrawn Trilogy (Heir to the Empire, Dark Force Rising and The Last Command), I Jedi, The Corellian Trilogy (Ambush at Corellia, Assault at Selonia, Showdown at Centerpoint) and the Hand of Thrawn Duology (Specter of the Past, Vision of the Future).

Follow those up with The New Jedi Order. There are 17 books in this series which is much more dramatic, tragic and life-altering to the characters than any of the events in the movies.

I would also recommend that you read the books in the X-Wing series as well, although these feature mainly new characters.

Most of these books continue where Return of the Jedi left off and you may already be familiar with many of the characters and events from the Young Jedi Knights series, many of which are written as companions to these books.

I am sure that you can find something that interests you in these books. Enjoy.
