Cayden Woo

im a 12 year old boy. i have about 320 dollars. i was going to get an xbox 360 slim, and i had a great bundle going, but then my parents told me i could play rated m games. the only games i was going to get were gears of war, mw2, and i was gonna preorder black ops and halo reach. i was also going to get some nice airsoft guns, but my parents wouldnt allow that either.i dont want to spend it all on clothes and things like that. i already have a couple of ipods (i work for my money and im not spoiled btw), and i dont need the new ipod touch or nano at the time. and i do want to buy clothes, just not use all of my money on them. also, im kind of with the whole emo/scene thing or whatever you call it (like the style).

thanks in advance.

Answer
I must applaud your thoughtful question. It shows a maturity level uncommon to many 12 year olds. In your case, you obviously are starting to become mature with money so I'll share some thoughts from my experience.
Our whole culture is absorbed and wrapped up with consuming and buying things. There's not enough emphasis placed on learning to manage money and understand how to be a good steward of it. (Go to dictionary.com and look up steward!)
My recommendation is this. Always save a minimum of 15-25% of your income. If you're brave and you want extra credit, save 50%. Spend the other amount on whatever you like. Here's the important part. For the money you save, learn how to make it grow. Begin to incorporate a new term into your mindset called "investing." This is the art of making your money earn money. It's a lesson most people don't begin to learn until much later in life and it's a lesson that most people WISH they had learned earlier in life especially as they reach their late 30's & 40's.
Now, I'm not saying you need to be like a 40 year old. I'm just saying that you can cure yourself of the culturally induced programming that make you want to constantly consume and spend and re-train your brain to be satisfied with simple things and to learn to make your money grow.
As an example, my 12 & 15 year old boys have both recently opened stock accounts (with parents help of course) so they can buy their first shares of stock. Some of the stocks they buy will pay them earnings or dividends which will grow over time.
Another thing that they've been taught is how to buy 1 ounce silver coins and 1/10 ounce gold coins because those represent 'real money' - not the paper dollars which are actually worthless.
Remember that most of what you buy, will wind up broken, sold or you'll lose interest in it sometime soon. The money you learn to save and invest will reward you for many years.
One last thing - I know you're only 12, but I'll say this for you to remember forever - Stay out of debt!! Never borrow to buy things....EVER. It's a bad trap that most of your friends won't avoid.
Ok...enjoy being 12...go earn more money....spend 50% on fun stuff or things you need and learn how to invest. You get a 'gold star' if you read this whole thing by the way!
Hope this was helpful for you.
Best Regards,
E

Video games/cool "gadgets" to ask for for Christmas?

Nick

Alright, I'm trying to finalize my Christmas/birthday list. I will be turning 17 this December. What are the "hot" video games of the season that should be on my list? I have the nintendo wii, the xbox 360, and the 3DS so anything for those systems would work. Any suggestions? I like most any type of game (action, role play, etc.) so that doesn't really matter. I just want great games. I already have Skyrim and I will probably ask for The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword. Would asking for The Legend of Zelda:Ocarina of Time for the 3DS be worth it as well? Or maybe even asking for the Kinect? Also, are there any cool, new "gadgets" (kindle, Ipad, Ipod touch, etc.) that I could ask for? I'm sorry, I know this is long but any and all help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much!

Answer
OK so I'll be first to admit that I don't own a DS, but based on my sales and what I've heard here goes the comprehensive list:

3DS:
Star Fox 64
Super Mario 3D Land
Sonic Generations
Mario Kart 7

XBOX 360: (a lot of titles, I'm to include whats hot, I think looks cool and is new, and one or two notsonew but AWESOME games)
NEW RELEASED
Modern Warfare 3
Battlefield 3
Assassins Creed 3
Gears of War 3
Portal 2
Saint's Row: The Third
Batman: Arkham City
RAGE
Lord of the Rings: War in the North
GoldenEye 007: Reloaded
WWE '12 (if you're into these games)
Ace Combat: Assault Horizon
Need for Speed: The Run
NOT SO NEW:
Assassins Creed Brotherhood
Fallout 3
Fallout New Vegas
Metro: 2033 (I swear by this game)

Wii: (sorry don't play the Wii very much)
Several titles from above (007, Mario Kart, etc.)
Spider-Man: Edge of Time

In regards to cool gadgets, I don't really know what you have or what type of things you would want. So I'll give you some vague answers as to what TYPE of stuff you might want (no brands or anything)
Smart phone
Tablet
Case (for any electronic items)
If you've always wanted to record, something to get record your gameplay on xbox 360 (Haupgaub, or something similar)
External Harddrive (if you need or want it)
Controller, or either system
Headset/Earphones (MP3 player as well if you don't have one)
Camera

Hopes this helps!
